Music & Performing Arts
Highvale Secondary College boasts an extensive Music Program that provides numerous avenues for students to unleash their creativity. Embedded within the College's curriculum, the study of music stands as a cornerstone, contributing significantly to our holistic approach to education.
Our dynamic music program encompasses a blend of classroom instruction and instrumental tuition. Catering to various skill levels, we offer junior, intermediate, and senior ensembles, including concert bands, strings orchestras and our HSC Orchestra. Singing is also catered for with vocal groups including our Harmonix choir, which is open to all students. Tuition is provided in Brass, Woodwind, Percussion, and Strings, as well as voice from Year 8 onwards. Supported by a state of the art Performing Arts Centre and dedicated instrumental music teachers, students are equipped with the resources necessary to flourish musically.
The school offers instrument hire services to facilitate accessibility. Conducted by a highly proficient music faculty, instrumental lessons are seamlessly integrated into the school day, with ensemble rehearsals scheduled after school hours.
A significant proportion of our students achieve success in Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) exams as another way to enhance their musical progress. Students can also opt to pursue VCE Music Performance, thus integrating their instrumental skills into their academic studies. Performances are central to our Performing Arts agenda, with showcases held both within the College premises and at external venues throughout the year. Additionally, students are encouraged to engage in the North East Victorian Region Youth Concert and other interschool music events, further enriching their musical journey.
Sports
House and Interschool sport plays an important part in the life of Highvale Secondary College. Students are able to develop personal and team skills and attain a high level of fitness in a spirit of healthy competition. The College is a registered or associate member of various sporting associations and, through them, participates in a wide variety of sporting endeavours.
Inter-house swimming and athletics are the backbone of the internal competition. A diverse range of recreational and outdoor education activities are also provided to further develop students’ confidence, self-esteem and leadership skills.
Debating
Debating is an invaluable skill for students:
Highvale Secondary College has Junior, Intermediate and Senior teams that participate in debating and public speaking, successfully competing against other schools across our region.
Robotics
Robotics gives each student the opportunity to be inspired by the excitement of hands-on, minds-on learning and the feeling of creating something with technology.
The Highvale Secondary College Robotics and 3D Printing Program offers students at all year levels the opportunity to develop their creativity, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork skills. This program provides a tangible platform for students to design, build, and test their programming knowledge, allowing them to gain hands-on experience with coding and modern systems. In the robotics component, students can test and refine their designs through both intra-school and inter-school tournaments. Participating in these competitions encourages continual evaluation and improvement of their creations in an enjoyable and interactive manner. Our team has achieved success in both regional and local robotics competitions.
