7-10 Curriculum

Our curriculum provides excellence in education:

  • We ensure that learning is relevant, rigorous, inclusive and accessible for all.

  • We develop the skills and desire for individual life-long learning by enabling students to understand how they learn.

  • We support learners who value innovation, develop skills in collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity by empowering students to take responsibility for their decisions.

  • We build students’ confidence and self-esteem through success.
  • Highvale Secondary College offers educational pathways tailored to meet the unique learning requirements of each student. We employ innovative and efficient methods to cater to varying abilities, we also recognise the distinct needs of students seeking advanced learning experiences.

We provide avenues for students to excel in their educational journey, including opportunities for acceleration, participation in extension initiatives, and the pursuit of specialised elective courses aligned with their interests.

An outstanding feature of our college is the vertical curriculum structure which provides individual programs for students and opportunities for acceleration and enrichment from Year 8. This provides students with the opportunities to identify their individual strengths and to be able to pursue them. This may mean that students study a subject or two beyond their age year level. Students are also able to choose from a wide range of available electives. Students select units that suit their abilities and interests. Students undertake formal counselling together with their parents to help inform their course decisions regarding studies and subject selection. Some Year 10 students may access VCE units under this acceleration model in a range of subjects.

The Victorian Curriculum sets out what every student should learn. The curriculum is the common set of knowledge and skills required by students for life-long learning, social development and active and informed citizenship.

The curriculum has been organised based on the Discipline-based Learning strand which consists of The Arts, English, Mathematics, Science, Languages, Humanities, Health and Physical Education, Design Technologies, Digital Technologies interwoven into the intercultural, ethical, creative and critical thinking and personal and social capabilities.

At the end of each year, students select a course for the following year. To support students in this process, the school provides a team of teachers who conduct course counselling interviews together with the student and their parent/guardian.
